A room without a chorus

The Pittsburgh show began with a full room of strangers and a new record. The title, “Pittsburgh, and the first show where nobody knew the songs,” was still only a line in a notebook, but the day already had the kind of uneven rhythm that usually ends up inside a song.
Nothing about it felt planned. We had enough time to notice the small details, not enough time to correct them, and that was exactly what made the story worth keeping.
The part we did not plan
The first song ended before anyone knew when to clap. For a moment, everyone stopped trying to improve the situation and simply listened to what was already happening.
That pause changed the work. It made clear that the songs had to carry themselves without memory, and it gave the unfinished pieces a direction that no amount of careful rehearsal had found.
Silence can be attention, too.
After that, the next decision was simple: keep going. We followed the sound that was there rather than the version we had expected to make.
What stayed with us
Later, when the equipment was packed and the room was quiet again, we drove home knowing a stranger had made space for the music. That was the proof we needed.
The story is not about getting everything right. It is about noticing the moment when a room, a recording, and a handful of people all begin to point in the same direction.
